How Effective are Arthritis Supplements?
In discussing arthritis supplements, it’s necessary to know more about the disease they are up against. Arthritis is a crippler of older adults which causes immense amounts of pain and joint degeneration. Patients will also experience major swelling and stiffness in affected joints as well as pain when the joint is used.
Weather can affect arthritis. If it starts to rain, or the temperature changes drastically to cold or hot, arthritis can flare up and cause a great deal of pain for the patient. You may find that the area surrounding some joints has turned red. The most severe effects of arthritis include joint and bone damage.
The most common form of arthritis, and the one most often found in older Americans, is osteoarthritis. This virulent form of arthritis is caused by the years of stress that have been put on the cartilage in the joints. Arthritis supplements may be beneficial in reducing pain and regenerating some flexibility back into the damaged joint.
People who suffer from Gout are enduring excessive amounts of pain. This condition stems from concentrations of uric acid building up in joints. Some affected joints can also swell to huge proportions which can only be decreased by surgery.
Rheumatoid arthritis develops when the body’s immune system mistakenly thinks various body parts, such as joints, eyes, the lungs, and the heart, is the bad guys, and sets out to destroy them. This form of arthritis can get so painful that the patient is unable to wear shoes, shave, or even comb his hair without severe pain. There is also a great deal of swelling associated with RA.
There are many different types of arthritis which are much less common. These include:
- Jaw arthritis – swelling and inflammation of the jaw joint.
- Ankylosing spondylitis – arthritis in the spine which limits the ability to turn the body and causes chronic pain.
- Psoriatic arthritis – joint inflammation along with the skin irritation, psoriasis.
- Reactive arthritis – a combination of large joint inflammation, conjunctivitis, and trouble urinating. A common mnemonic for this condition is that the patient “can’t see, can’t pee, and can’t climb a tree”.
NSAIDs (Non-Steroid Anti-Inflammatory Drugs) are a family of drugs that have been used effectively in the treatment of arthritis. It has been found that if these drugs are used alongside a DMARD (Disease Modifying Anti-Rheumatic Drug), the treatment will work even better. In severe cases, treatments using silver or gold can be added.
Both have been used to control the pain and swelling of arthritis with favourable results.
Always remember that arthritis supplements are not medications. They do a great job of strengthening the immune system as well as reducing pain, swelling, and stiffness. In addition, they are considered to speed up the healing process. If for some reason they aren’t producing the desired effects for you, you should talk to your doctor about prescription drugs.
Arthritis Supplements V Medication
Depends what level of pain you are in will determine where you are with your arthritis treatment.
If you suffer aches and pains that come to most of us, you will likely grab a Tylenol as we see advertised on the TV, for others we will opt for a natural treatment and seek supplements such as Glucosamine and Chondroitin to reduce the swelling caused by arthritis.
But unfortunately for some, while you would like to opt for a gentler remedy your pain, your arthritis may have progressed to a stage where you must stop the arthritis progressing further than it already has.
If this is the case you are probably considering taking medication for your Rheumatoid or Osteoarthritis or already on a variety of arthritis medications.
For those who are feeling pains or have joint swelling currently, visit your doctor and get checked for arthritis or other joint problems. Make sure your immune system is working as well as it should be. Taking supplements will help either way, but if you are on medication you have to be sure there will not be a reaction that will cause harm to you.

Back Pain and Natural Anti-Inflammatory Supplements
At this point in time, it is no secret that serious side effects are associated with regular use of NSAIDs and the new COX2 inhibitors. And this is a very real problem because millions of people regularly take these medications for pain and inflammation.
As chiropractors, we try to view conditions/diseases and the related interventions from a more natural perspective, compared with medical doctors. Accordingly, we should appreciate the fact that we literally could not survive without the COX enzymes.
Why then, is there such an effort to inhibit COX2? The answer is straightforward…COX2 is the focus of therapy because the drug developers, medical doctors, and patients have never thought to consider the physiological function of COX2. The superficial reason we are given to inhibit the COX enzymes is that this will allow for the inhibition of pro-inflammatory prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). The problem with is view is that the following question is never asked: What is the precursor of PGE2?
As it turns out, dietary fatty acids are the precursor of PGE2, and the COX enzymes merely convert the fatty acids, that we eat, into pro-inflammatory or anti-inflammatory prostaglandins, leukotrienes, thromboxanes, and other substances, all of which are collectively referred to “autocoids.” The COX2 enzyme is activated during physical and biochemical injury states, and it will act on whatever fatty acids we place into the membranes of our cells. In other words, we eat fatty acids and they get incorporated into our cell membranes. Injury occurs, and COX2 becomes activated and acts on the diet-derived fatty acids…it is that simple.
Four main diet-derived fatty acids get incorporated into cell membranes, including dihomo-gamma linolenic acid (DGLA), arachidonic acid (AA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docahexaenoic acid (DHA). If the COX2 acts on AA, we get a pro-inflammatory response; however, if COX2 acts on DGLA, EPA, and DHA, we get a response that resolves inflammation.
We need all of the four diet-derived fatty acids in our cell membranes for an appropriate state of “inflammation homeostasis” to exist. The best way to achieve this balance is achieve a 1:1 ratio of omega-6 to omega-3 fatty acids in the diet. We can move toward achieving this ratio if we eat fruits, vegetables, raw nuts, omega-3 eggs, and wild game or grass-fed meats that contain omega-3 fatty acids. Most will not easily get omega-3 meats, and this is why taking and EPA/DHA supplement is crucial. We should all be taking 1-3 grams per day of EPA/DHA. Concentrated fish oil capsule are available that give us about 600 mg EPA/DHA per capsule.
We should be glad to have COX2 enzymes in our bodies; the function is promoted healing, but this can only take place if our cell membranes have the proper balance of fatty acids. In addition to eating properly and taking EPA/DHA, I would suggest that we all take a multi-vitamin, magnesium (400-1000 mg/d), coenzyme Q10 (100 mg/d), and ginger/turmeric (1-2 grams/d).
When it comes to locomotion and movement joints are the most important part of our body. Our joints are the hardest pressed parts of our body when it comes to movement, so you can well understand the stress they have to undergo over a lifetime.
While you may not be able to control genetic traits you can still do your part in keeping your joints in perfect condition by giving them a little protection with a few precautions. It is most important to take care of our joints to keep them supple and flexible at work and at play.
To maintain your joints you should maintain a healthy weight. If we carry too much weight on our body it affects our load bearing joints. Healthy exercise is also necessary under the guidance of an expert. Many people have the misconception that exercise might damage their joints. Although intensive sports participation may not always be beneficial to joints, moderate exercise promotes movement, strength, sustained function as well as aiding all-round physical and psychological well-being.
Glucosamine, an amino acid which is naturally used in the formation and repair of cartilage, is often administered to increase rate of formation of new cartilage by providing more of the necessary building blocks. Chondroitin is another example of a supplement which is partly responsible for the resiliency of cartilage and prevents the action of enzymes that destroy cartilage. Other examples are MSM, and different combination supplements.
In a national survey it has been showed that most doctors would advise Osteo Bi-Flex than any other joint care brand. Osteo Bi-Flex helps renew cartilage, lubricate joints and support range of motion over time. Osteo Bi-Flex can help provide your body with the valuable nutrients that lubricate and help cushion your cartilage and joints. Be sure to get some Osteo Bi-flex for your medicine cabinet.
